Recycling Design Project
Fall 2021
In my Introduction to Engineering Analysis course, we were taught the engineering design process. We then put this knowledge to practice in designing a solution to the problem of a lack of recycling on Pitt's campus. Keep scrolling to see our full solution.
Front View
We began our design with looking at the physical appearance elements. We chose to make the bins the typical recycling green color with the clear white text and symbols to contrast. One of the primary problems that we identified through interviews was that people struggle to locate recycling bins and know what can/cannot be recycled. This design should fix that. Furthermore, we decided to add a speaker built-in, which would provide positive reinforcement for recyclers. Lastly, there will be a GPS chip embedded in the bin that links to our app, as seen below.
Side View
Based on feedback from our first design, we added a QR code located on the side of the bin, which users can utilize to download our app. Also, you can clearly see within the Front and Side Views that the top of our bin tapers outward to provide a wider opening for ease of recyclable disposal.
Top View
Also based on our prototype feedback, we decided to add solar panels to be located on that outward tapering opening, which will provide power for the electronics housed inside of the bin.
App
Our concept for the app is relatively simple. It will appear similar to your favorite map/navigation app and will prominently feature these pins with recycling symbols on them which indicate the locations of recycling bins. We feel that this will also assist in the location of recycling bins for people as they can easily just open the app on their way to where they're going and find the nearest bin along their path. Clicking on the pin will also reveal more data about the bin, such as more description of its location, as well as what items can be recycled there.
